TwitterPocalypse – Is anyone that upset?

So apparently some design flaws in Twitter is causing some third party applications to fail. When the number of tweets exceeds 2,147,483,647, Twitter apps may have some issues updating, searching and other oddities.

At the moment Twitterific 2.0 on the iPhone does not connect properly and will not update. Tweetie works just fine, but the search isn’t updating properly. MacWorld described the issue in some detail.

So how is this impacting you? I can honestly say I’m coping quite well, and even as it’s being compared to the Y2K bug which didn’t affect too much, this bug will be forgotten if even end up being as well known as Y2K.

UPDATE: Tweetie for the desktop has been updated addressing issues with Twiterpocolypse

1.2.2

  • Fix Twitpocalypse search wackiness
  • Fix following with protected users
  • Fix Open in Browser

Would You Like 1 Million People Following You?

Oh why didn’t we come up with this before? Maybe because it’s been done. It was a neat idea back when the Internet was young, but truly – nobody like a page full of ads… except the seller.

The twist on this version is instead of advertising a service, you are advertising your Twitter account in hopes of gaining followers. There is a featured Twitter account which according to the FAQ

…are randomly selected at different stages by our software, the system, to become featured publishers and to receive a predetermined amount of Twitter followers based on our system logic.

So it’s random.

The kicker is somebody will win a million followers, which I suppose is everyone who’s ever signed up and paid for the service.

Clever idea, and a win-win for everyone involved – just hope the winner isn’t a loser.

Last.fm Sends Your Data to the RIAA

Riding the coattails of the FaceBook fiasco from this past week, there’s word that the everyone’s buddy, the RIAA, asked Last.fm for its user data in hopes to find users listening to the unreleased U2 album that has been leaked onto BitTorrent sites.

This is another case of how much data you are willing to give up to companies for their services at the possible expense of having your information sold, robbed or given away. While in my opinion, your data on their services isn’t your data – I am not at all for being sold out.

UPDATE: Since TechCrunch’s story was posted, Last.fm has been out fire fighting with all the negative press. Apparently, TechCrunch is full of shit. Read Last.fm’s response.

FaceBook’s TOC Rolled Back

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Over the past few weeks FaceBook has been under a lot of fire over their controversial change in their Terms of Service. FaceBook said in their terms that they can more or less do whatever they wanted, with anything you put on the site.

After logging in this morning, a large TOS update says they are going back to the old TOS. I can only suspect that even after all this is said an done they will go forward somehow someway with their original intent.
